The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , known as The Human Jukebox, performs their cover of Adele’s Hello at this year’s Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands. I’m reminded of why I wanted to play trumpet. This is amazing.

So many split bells, you’d think they were from Philly. I normally really enjoy Southern’s shows, but this just didn’t do it for me. (Might be the source material, though.)

As much as I despite Ohio State, their marching band does it better.

I thought it was glorious imperfection. I play trumpet professionally, so I can fully appreciate what’s going on here. It’s not perfect, but there’s a bravado and in your face-ness that just makes me smile.

That was a great show, no doubt.

Sounds like an angry beehive at times. Yikes.

Yea, I can see where you’re coming from. When I think about the source material, I just don’t think that bright, brash tone fits. Adele is smooth. This is not that, and I don’t think the composition works with this kind of interpretation. But, that’s definitely Southern’s calling card.
If I may: What sort of music do you play professionally? The trumpet is so versatile it’s hard to make a guess with any degree of confidence. (Although I seem to remember in your painting post, O.C. mentioned you played for a living.)

I used to do the band-nerd thing through high school and part of college, so I have an appreciation for this kind of band, just being able to put current songs together so fast is a feat. However, at the same time, I’ve always thought that they were also sloppy and try to overcome quality with volume. Even the dancers, as hot as a few of them are, were off. The coreography just sort of felt like it was phoned in. I’ve got a friend that still co-ordinates the drum lines for a university and I’m pretty certain he would have those cymbal players shot on sight if they were off as much as those guys were....

All true. But I like to call it glorious imperfection. There's a certain spirit in the roughness that I really dig. I was only in marching band through three years of HS, and our band was terrible. I ended up getting performance degrees and never marched in college. But even as a classically trained trumpet player, I get jazzed hearing the full frontal assault of marching brass. What did you play?

Our director came from a military institute before he taught at a public school, so anything less than perfect was a punishable offence. We had a stupid amount of trophies though, so there was a certain amount of pride that went with being a part of that. ...anyway, to answer your question. Trombone & Bass Guitar (white boy can’t dance, but he still got da funk). After I got a vocal and Jazz performance scholarship, I quit marching.

In college, marching was required of all ed majors, but not for perf majors. When I auditioned for the top wind ensemble, which was also directed by the marching band director, he asked me why I wasn’t in the marching band. I said, “Well, I’m a performance major, so it’s not a requirement. And, for the kind of playing I want to do, I don’t think it would be good for me.” All true, but I was put last chair and learned an important lesson about diplomacy.

not too bad!
